How Procrastination Is Detrimental To
Your Feel Great Journey
In our quest to simplify our lives, procrastination makes the simplification process more difficult than it needs to be. When we procrastinate, we clutter up our lives with half-finished projects. These visual reminders of how much there is to do seem to make simplifying even more difficult.
Recently I realized how much procrastination complicated my life. One day I looked around my house (and home office) and found the following things:
- Clean clothes piled on the dresser waiting to be folded and put away
- A pile of empty boxes in the basement to be collapsed and put in the recycle bin
- A load of clothes in the dryer and one in the washer, both machines done
- Clean sheets on the bed waiting for the bed to be made
- Dirty dishes in the sink waiting to be washed
- Piles of dog poop in the yard to be picked up from the winter
- Several half-completed jobs sitting on my desk
I realized how stressed I was with all this facing me that day. And the reason everything was piled up was because of my procrastinating. So I spent several hours just getting most of these things done. In the process, I had to make myself NOT procrastinate to switch jobs when I got bored. That's the number one reason I procrastinate. When I get bored, I change projects. But that day, I got a lot of satisfaction getting a lot done and simplifying.
After that, I needed to be conscious about finishing small projects but so far, so good. And as I finish projects I simplify my life. I feel like a weight has been lifted so that I can better focus.
