Mental Energy On Your Feel Great Journey

If we feel great mentally, then it will be much easier to make changes to feel great physically. But in order to feel great mentally, we need to do things that will make us feel great physically. It's circular.

I firmly believe memory loss can be reversed and have personally experienced a small sampling. I can tell when I start to remember better. Read more here: Memory Loss Can Be Reversed -- Just Do This.

If you haven't read the Exercise pages, please do so before going on here. I am not going to lie to you. You can't feel great mentally without exercising.

Once you are exercising, there are other things you can do to increase your mental energy and agility. One of my favorites is Lumosity. There are games that are fun and they keep adding games. It's free for the first week or so and it's not very expensive after that to continue. I have improved significantly and it's really fun.

There are also plenty of free things to do, especially online, to keep your mind active. One of my favorite activities is to learn a foreign language. I am working on Chinese, Hebrew and Czech right now. There are lots of free websites to get you started. Here is one I stumbled across just today called Open Culture. Here's an idea. Make flashcards and take them on your walk or run. You'll be surprised how fast the time goes. Although you may not want to take them swimming unless you laminate them!

Some people work crossword puzzles. I have tried to learn a new musical instrument (and I plan to try it again soon). Take a class at the local community college or university. Often these courses are free if you are over 50 and there is class space. Think back to when you were in school. What subject did you really enjoy? I knew someone that loved history and wanted to be an archeologist. If that sounds like you, take some history courses. Is there no school that is close to you that offers this? Then get online at a big university, go to the bookstore page and see what books they are requiring for a course that sounds interesting to you. Then go to Amazon and buy it. Or what about your public library? If you have read all of their books, ask them about an interlibrary loan. Read and stay sharp!

There are so many options out there that it amazes me when all people do is watch television. However, I must say that some of the educational channels like Public Television has shows where they tell you to go to the internet for more information and then you can often find books that are great research on a topic you watched.

Speaking of libraries, there are so many things that libraries do now that they didn't do when we were kids. They have computers for you to get on the internet. Some have classes. And what about volunteering at the library?

Volunteering is an excellent way to learn new things, get some exercise and help others in the process, which is very emotionally rewarding and satisfying. You can also teach others what you know about. Check your local community college and see if you have the credentials to teach a course there, maybe ESL (English as a Second Language). Imagine the wide range of people you will meet and be able to pour your life into. Talk about satisfying!

What about starting a book club? You could meet other people with your interests and you could even require an age limit so that no one under 50 could join. Wouldn't that be something!

Or take a computer class and learn how to do e-mail. What about building your own website? This is a great way to keep up on family events when families are all across the country if not the world. Don't know how to build a website? Neither did I until a few weeks ago. Now look at it! There are classes to learn how to do it or you can learn online. I started with How to Create a Website - Free Tutorial for Beginners.

If you don't want to do the entire website building, set up a free blog. I use Blogger and I have several blogs including one that follows My Feel Great Journey.

And let's not forget the people in retirement communities that may not have family. Do you think you could give them some of the suggestions you have found here that could increase their quality of life? When are we going to stop waiting for everyone else to respect and care for our retired people and start doing it ourselves? There is a vast reservoir of wisdom and knowledge out there that is being wasted and neglected.

Here is a video I ran across recently with ideas on how to improve your memory. I have already listed a few here but there are a few more here.

At this point, I am just throwing out ideas. I'm sure you could come up with plenty of others. The point is, don't just waste away and wait for someone else to do something. No one is going to. So you need to get up off the couch, turn off the television and go out there. Now, you start saying it to yourself.

I can do this.

On major area that can help you focus is to reduce the clutter in your life. I am in a major simplifying mode right now. On the next page, I want to share ideas with you that may help you too.
